Reception class have enjoyed learning about The enormous turnip and The Little Red Hen this week to finish off our learning on fairytales. After half term our topic is Arnett Hills and Beyond! Our role play areas have been set up as a space station and a space rocket area. The children are so excited to learn in there. Over the holidays if your child wants to make something to do with space or if they would like to bring some space books in to share when we return, that would be lovely!
We have been continuing our learning on fairy tales this week by reading Jack and the jelly beanstalk. The children have been writing the story and have been coming up with their own versions in our literacy lessons. In maths we have been looking at parts of numbers. For example 2 and 3 are parts of 5. We used dotted dice and tens frames to do this. Next week we will be finishing our learning on fairy tales by looking at The enormous turnip and The little red hen.
Our new topic in Reception is fairy tales. We have been exploring the story of Jack and the beanstalk this week and have used story maps to help us retell the story using actions. The children made a Jack for our indoor role play area and a Giant for our Giant’s castle outside. We have been amazed by their story language in their play. Today we had our first show and tell where the children brought in lots of fairy tale items. We then spent the afternoon in the woods using sticks as tools to dig up stones that we can paint into magic beans next week!
Last week was very busy in Reception class. The children performed their Christmas Nativity ‘Everyone Loves A Baby!’ three times to amazed audiences! They were all so enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed wearing their costumes for the first time. We also had our outdoor photography exhibition on Wednesday afternoon where Reception grown ups were invited to share in our learning. The children spoke so confidently and it was a real success.
We have finished our topic on ‘People who help us’ by learning about postmen and women. In learning together time the children enjoyed delivering letters on our very own chalk road, making gifts such as bracelets for their family and friends and creating a range of Christmas crafts. The children have all written a letter to themselves which we will post on Monday morning on our first class outing to the post box. Next week we will be reading lots of festive stories and enjoying all the Christmas activities planned for the school!
Last week in Reception we learnt all about vets and lollipop people. The children really enjoyed using the zebra crossing and road signs and we practised crossing the road. We spoke about looking and listening for cars and crossing in a safe space where we can see. Our new role play areas opened. The children had a lot of winter and Christmas fun in these areas and enjoyed dressing up.

This week we have had a lovely time learning about the Police and the different types of work they do. The children enjoyed taking part in role play activities based on police work and investigated the different types of finger prints. We also had a visit from Katherine who is a vet. She spoke to the children about the different kinds of animals that she treats and even dressed one of our children up as a Veterinary surgeon. On Friday we ended our week by building a ginormous Autumn leaf pile in our woods and taking it in turns to jump into it! Next week we will be learning all about doctors.

It has been another exciting week learning about fire safety in Reception. We have learnt to ‘stop, drop and roll’ if our clothes catch a light and we know when there is fire we must get outside, we learnt all this through the story ‘No dragons for tea’. We also learnt the reason why we must stay low if there is smoke in our house – ask your child and see if they can remember! The children also learnt about Remembrance Day and why people make poppies. We then made our own poppies and have displayed them in our classroom.
In Maths we will continue to look at shape and pattern. Why not go on a shape hunt at home? In literacy we will be looking at police officers and investigating our finger prints. Have a lovely weekend!

Welcome back! This week Reception class have loved learning about fire fighters! We have been pretending to be fire fighters in our very own fire station and even made our own fire engine. The children have been telling others to “stand back!” as they deal with fires. Next week we will be continuing our learning on fires by looking at fire safety through the story “No dragons for tea”. The children have also continued to enjoy exploring the festival of Diwali and loved their Indian dance workshop with Mrs Shah! Next week our indoor role play area will be turned into a doctors. In phonics, some children will be moving onto the phase 3 sounds j,v,w,x,y. Others will continue to look at phase 2 sounds and tricky words – I, to, no, go, the and into.

Last week we had a great time learning all about our bodies. We drew ourselves in our writing books and tried to hear the first sound in the parts of the body, there was such an improvement from the ones we drew on our first day! We also had our photo taken for the Watford observer. On Friday we enjoyed our time in the woods, climbing on the logs and making fires. The children’s confidence in climbing his really improving as a result of our Friday afternoon visits! This week we will be exploring our 5 senses. In phonics some children will be learning the last phase 2 sounds (h,b,f and l) others will be recapping the sounds learnt so far and learning e,u and r). We are really focussing on our name writing at the moment. Any practise at this at home would be wonderful.

This week Reception class started their first ever PE lessons. We climbed on apparatus and moved in different ways around the hall. The children did a great job getting changed independently. In literacy, we learnt about different kinds of houses and have started using talk partners to help us think of ideas. We also took advantage of the nice weather by weeding our garden. My lovely helpers were given certificates in Friday’s assembly as they worked tirelessly for the best part of the morning and even helped plant some spring flowering bulbs in the afternoon! Next week we will be learning about our bodies and practising drawing the finer details like our eyebrows. In phonics, some children will be going over the sounds we have learnt so far (s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o) others will be moving on to c,k,e,u,r.

It has been a lovely week here in Reception! The children have enjoyed talking about their families and loved their first computing lesson where we learnt how to use a mouse. Thank you for the number hunt pictures that have been coming in so far, please keep them coming! Today the children enjoyed learning the rules of the woods and climbing logs and some children worked with Mrs Sheeky to build an incredible den! Next week we will be learning the sounds n, m, d, g and o. We will also be starting our maths lessons and PE so any extra changing practise this weekend would be greatly appreciated!

Wow! We have made it through our first full week! The children have been fabulous and are really enjoying our learning environment. We have been working on their social skills and strongly encourage play dates to help the children solidify friendships in a home environment. This week we will be learning all about our families and talking about how all families are different. The children will also be starting phonics this week. They will be learning the sounds s,a,t,p and i. Please look at our maths videos too which will help your child develop their understanding of number. We will be starting maths next week!
